This is a question we get asked a lot, and the short answer is a long time! A Dryrobe® weatherproof changing robe has been designed to last for years. When properly maintained, they can be in regular use for often a decade or more.
Built as high-performance technical outerwear, a Dryrobe® Advance changing robe is constructed to withstand severe coastal winds, freezing mountain rain, mud, and continuous physical wear. It’s an investment that ensures you’ll stay protected from the elements for years to come. Dryrobe® founder Gideon Bright recalls selling one of our very first changing robes at a trade event in the early days. When returning to that same event over a decade later, he was thrilled to meet an attendee who was still using her original Dryrobe® Advance, going strong after more than ten years of continuous outdoor use! This real-world durability is central to the Dryrobe® philosophy: technical equipment should be engineered to take a beating, provide genuine value season after season, and remain part of your kit for years to come.

Built to Last: The Anatomy of Technical Durability
The long lifespan of a Dryrobe® Advance is rooted in uncompromised technical engineering and deliberate material selection. Every component is specified to endure harsh weather without sacrificing performance.
-
NY-Exo-Shell Waterproof Outer: Constructed from high-density, 100% GRS-certified recycled fabrics, the outer shell features heat-sealed taped seams and a PFC-free durable water-repellent (DWR) finish to lock out driving rain and bitter wind chill.
-
HLaerov300 Thermal Fleece Lining: Unlike standard linings that matte down or retain water, our high-loft fleece wicks moisture away from the body while maintaining thermal efficiency, keeping you warm even when pulled directly over wet gear.
-
Corrosion-Resistant Hardware: Exposure to saltwater and grit degrades conventional clothing. The Dryrobe® Advance features heavy-duty, corrosion-resistant YKK® two-way reversible zips engineered for smooth operation in freezing conditions.
As a certified B Corporation, our environmental strategy centres on "Buying less, buying better". Extreme product durability is our fundamental commitment to resource conservation: making equipment that resists replacement is the single most effective way to keep waste out of landfills.

How to Maximise the Lifespan of Your Dryrobe®
While every Dryrobe® Advance is built for practical durability, basic technical maintenance preserves the weatherproofing, breathability, and fleece insulation over many seasons.
Over-washing or using conventional household laundry products is the primary cause of premature wear. Standard biological detergents and fabric softeners strip the PFC-free DWR coating and clog the breathable fleece structure.
Follow these operational maintenance steps to keep your kit performing at its peak:
-
Rinse & Spot Clean: After exposure to salt spray, mud, or grit, rinse the outer shell with cold fresh water and allow it to dry naturally. Wash the complete robe only when essential.
-
Wash Machine Settings: When a full wash is necessary, turn the garment inside out and select a gentle 30°C (86°F) cycle. Never use fabric softeners, bleach, or biological agents.
-
Technical Cleaners & Reproofing: Clean using specialised eco-friendly technical detergents. When water stops beading on the outer shell, reapply a reproofing spray. Check our complete guide to care for your Dryrobe® for recommended product care essentials.
-
Correct Air Drying: Hang your robe indoors at room temperature or line dry inside out. Keep away from direct heat sources like radiators, campfires, or tumble dryers, which can melt taped seam seals and degrade synthetic fibres.

What Happens When You're Done?
Our responsibility extends across the entire lifecycle of our products, and we work to ensure that no Dryrobe® changing robe ends up in a landfill.
Trade It In with Dryrobe® x Reskinned
When your technical gear reaches the end of its active use with you, whether you require a different size or are upgrading to new outerwear, it should remain in circulation. Through our circular trade-in platform, you can seamlessly recycle your old Dryrobe® Advance.
The Dryrobe® x Reskinned trade-in program inspects, restores, and rehomes pre-owned changing robe. If an item is beyond repair, Reskinned recycles the raw textile fibres back into manufacturing streams, keeping them in use for as long as possible.

Upcycling via the Dryrobe® Reworked Collection
For materials that cannot be rehomed directly, or for textile remnants from production, we apply functional upcycling principles.
The Dryrobe® Reworked collection transforms reclaimed fabrics into accessories, including protective travel bags and outdoor mats. By diverting offcuts and retired gear into new equipment, we preserve resources and eliminate potential landfill waste.
An Investment in Technical Performance
Choosing a Dryrobe® changing robe is an investment in long-term outdoor durability, extreme weather protection, and certified environmental accountability. Engineered for anywhere-anytime use, it is built to keep you warm and protected for years and years of adventure.
