How sustainability is woven into the fabric of Dryrobe®

5 minute read

We strongly believe in the ethos of buy less, buy better.

That’s why our outdoor products are built to last for years and years since Dryrobe® first began.

Our products are specifically designed with durability and reliability at their core. But there are two parts to the story. Not only is this good for customer satisfaction, but it’s also a positive investment in the future of the planet.

Overconsumption is causing huge pressure on our planet’s resources, and we want to encourage our customers not to buy more than they need.

We strive for longevity in terms of a product’s life span, but we also consider the impact of its creation on the environment. A key part of this is how our product materials are resourced.

In the first episode of our sustainability series, we explain what materials we use and how we choose these to reduce our reliance on virgin materials.

Why is this important to us? Dryrobe® was created to enhance outdoor enjoyment and make the discomfort of cold and wet weather more bearable. Acting in consideration of these natural environments that bring us so much joy only seems right. We should have nature’s best interests at heart, and give back to the place that gives so much to us.

As a Certified B Corp that is continually evolving to improve our sustainability journey, we’re incredibly proud to be part of the growing global community that encourages and supports the prioritisation and implementation of business strategies, decisions, and procedures that favour people and the planet.

At present, these are the certified materials we’re using, from fabrics to packaging. All of our supplier factories maintain SMETA approval or are BSCI audited.

Recycled nylon

All our Dryrobe® Advance change robes, the Dryrobe® Adapt, and our accessories are made with 100% recycled nylon, which is approved by the Global Recycle Standard.

This breathable, weatherproof shell fabric is made with pre-consumer recycled nylon that would otherwise be destined for landfill.

Recycled polyester

The super warm, fast-drying fleece lining featured in the Dryrobe® Advance and Dryrobe® Adapt is made from 100% recycled polyester (rPET), approved by the Global Recycle Standard and certified OEKO-TEX Standard 100.

This high-performance fabric is made from recycled post-consumer plastic.

PFC-free waterproof finishing

Our products are built for the unpredictability of the outdoors, so reliable but sustainable waterproofing is an essential element.

Traditional PFCs can take up to 1,000 years to completely leave the planet. So we have opted to use a PFC-free BIONIC-FINISH ECO Durable Water-Repellent (DWR) finishing on all of our waterproof products.

This plant-based solution doesn't contain any harmful compounds, delivering high-performance, long-lasting weather resistance and reducing the impact on the environment.

How we utilise the fastest-growing plant on the planet

20% of the sole of our Thermal Boots is made from algae-based Bloom Rise™.

As the fastest-growing plant on Earth, algae helps to prevent the build-up of waste material that ends up in landfills by being transformed into materials used for products instead.

This also reduces the amount of virgin EVA material used, reduces carbon emissions, and helps to restore aquatic habitats when cleared from blue spaces.

While we’re on the subject of our Thermal Boots, it’s worth highlighting that the inner and upper are also produced with 100% recycled materials!

Organic cotton

We only use 100% organic cotton for our Towel Dryrobe® range, certified by The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).

GOTS is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain.

It’s made using natural fibres and grown without herbicides, pesticides, and genetically modified organisms. And to top it off, it uses less water than normal cotton, too.

Recycled stainless steel products with Ocean Bottle

We’ve teamed up with Ocean Bottle to create a co-branded, high-quality, stainless steel water bottle.

Ocean Bottle creates its products using 90% recycled materials.

The stainless steel industry approximately contributes to 7% of global CO2 emissions. By working with Ocean Bottle to produce a double-wall vacuum-insulated stainless steel and recycled water bottle, we’re reducing our CO2 emissions by 70%.

Responsible packaging

Our products' packaging is made of FSC-certified, recycled cardboard, which ensures that the material is responsibly sourced.

These are the main materials we use, but there are interesting facts about other products, too. For example, the waterproof and windproof outer of the Dryrobe® Lite is made using 100% REPREVE® recycled polyester, which contains a minimum of 37 recycled plastic bottles!
