Why we’re proud to be a B Corp, as described by our team.

10 minute read

We’re on a mission to use business for good.

Through making quality products for the outdoors, we’re channelling our vision of inspiring positive change for people and the planet. We want to have as minimal negative impact on the planet as we can, while also supporting individuals and charities to help more people get outdoors , doing what they love. Being a B Corp has been an integral part of actioning this mission, and allows us to measure our impact and hold ourselves accountable.

This mission comes from everyone behind the scenes at Dryrobe®, who work hard to put this into action.

What is a B Corp?

A certified B Corporation is a business that, verified by B Lab, meets the requirements of high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. B Lab are constantly updating their standards as the world around us changes, ensuring that businesses are constantly striving for improvement.

Tasmin Chilcott, Dryrobe’s Sustainability Manager, breaks down what a B Corp is in her own words:

“A B Corp is a business that does business for good, essentially, so focusing on the planet and people before profits. One of our key focuses is being a B Corp, and actioning everything we possibly can to reduce our impact in everything that we do.”

We spoke with some of our team to find out what being a B Corp means to them individually, beyond the badge.

What are we actually doing as a B Corp?

Built to Last

Part of our ethos, which runs throughout our entire business, is to build a product that lasts a long time. Gideon Bright, our Founder and CEO, explains the importance of this and reflects on his commitment to using Dryrobe® as a force for good:

“The Dryrobe® itself, over the years we've done a lot of improvement to it. The thing is built to last, it's super durable it will last for a very long time. We’ve sold the Dryrobe® to people and bumped into them 10, 15 years later, they’ve still got it, they're still using it. I'm very proud of that.  It's the main feature that I think differentiates it from anything else that’s out there.… We make a product that lasts for a very long time, and that's one of the best things you can do.”

Beyond making a product that is designed to last a long time, Gideon wanted to work towards B Corp status to channel positive change within the rest of the business, through sustainable practices and charitable giving.

“I think when you start a business it’s all about survival, but then as things progress you sort of think, well, what's it all about, what do I want it to be. I want to be doing some good… and B Corp is a way of holding ourselves accountable, a way of measuring ourselves, checking we’re going in the right direction.”

Active Changes

B Corp has been crucial in helping Dryrobe® shape our business strategy to better the planet, and Tasmin discussed with us some of the things we’ve been working on to achieve this.

“One of the great things about being a B Corp is that it helps us strive to be better as a business in everything that we do, and part of this is that we've used B Corp to help us design our sustainability strategy to reduce our impact when it comes to our transportation methods.”

“One of the most recent things we’ve done is implement a local purchasing policy, and this ensures any of our office purchases are from local businesses or small businesses, or businesses that are doing amazing things for the environment or people that are connected to it.”

The local purchasing policy ensures that any purchases made for our office must be either locally sourced, sustainable, cruelty-free, or certified by a Third Party (like B Corp).

“A key highlight from last year is that we put all of our staff through our Carbon Literacy Training, which means that everybody has the power now to adopt these amazing methods to reduce their impact when it comes to their work in the business and also individually.”

The Carbon Literacy training with Protect Our Winters taught Dryrobe® employees tools to address the current climate crisis, and empowered us as outdoor enthusiasts with the knowledge of how to reduce our carbon footprint and take meaningful actions to reduce emissions. Everyone earned certification as being carbon literate, leading to the team making changes in our day-to-day lives.

“Something we're consistently working on is our carbon footprint. We measure this every year and implement actions to reduce our impact. So one of the most recent things we've done is reduce the packaging we use in terms of weight and material, and opt for paper bags where possible on smaller orders.”

Beyond packaging and transport, our product team also work hard to ensure our materials used are the best we can do in terms of impact on the environment. Djuanita Soomoodra, Head of Product, talks through these materials in Episode 1 of our Sustainability Series

“Our ethos really is to buy less, buy better. Water repellency is very important to us… we predominantly use Rudolf BIONIC ®Eco. Traditional PFC’s can take up to 1000 years to leave the planet, so this one has a lot less harmful chemicals.”

Community Impact

A crucial part of our commitment to giving back is through the Dryrobe® Warmth Project, which was created to make meaningful change, ensuring more people can experience the benefit of getting outdoors. Dylan Tweedale, Community Impact Co-ordinator, describes this for us:

“The Dryrobe® Warmth Project was born out of the desire to do good, supplying essential kit to our cold water communities. Currently, we allocate 1.21% of our profits to community projects through charitable donations, product donations, and volunteer hours.”

“As part of bettering our social impact as a B Corp, our staff enjoy two volunteer days a year so they can volunteer for an organisation that means something to them. Recently, our team visited the RSPCA Cornwall branch where they helped out at the rescue facility. Our team also took part in some conservation days in Braunton Burrows, helping to protect the UNESCO Heritage site for generations to come.”

“Currently, we support 13 non-profit organisations worldwide and counting. Supporting veterans through Operation Surf, Championing men's mental health with Icebreakers and protecting our homes famous waves with North Devon World Surf Reserve.”

We’re so proud to work with so many amazing charities. Check out the Warmth Project page on our website to find out more about who we work with.

“Working for a B Corp for me feels like I'm working towards a bigger purpose for people and planet.”

The People of Dryrobe®

A key part of being a B Corp is focusing on employee well-being and promoting a positive workplace environment. HR Manager Kelly Games breaks this down for us, and what being a B Corp means to her:

“What B Corp means to me is about the welfare of staff and how we are continuously improving what we're doing, and kind of getting on top of things before the government gets there. The company benefits is a really good package that we offer to new employees, so when you are on board with us you get a Dryrobe® Advance and we also get five cost price Dryrobes to give to family and friends throughout the year. We also have health insurance and life insurance, so our health insurance covers us for dental, optical, and for any serious issues that we have in hospital.”

Promoting wellbeing in the workplace is a vital part of supporting the team, something Kelly is constantly working on.

“Something we do really well at is our culture, I think our culture's lovely. So when you walk into the office, everyone's saying hello in the morning. I look forward to making a coffee with some of my friends, and it is a really friendly environment, we go on lunch runs, we do team events.”

Spending time as a team doing the things we love outdoors has been incredibly positive in building a supportive work environment.

“One of the team events we did last year was a trip to Scotland! So 40 of us spent three days together near Fort William, and it was incredible. We spent so much time doing amazing outdoor activities, which is something that the company lives and breathes. We had so many amazing moments during that stay.”

Being a B Corp has brought Dryrobe® together for a shared, positive mission to use the business for good. Gideon shared his thoughts on how important a positive workplace culture is, working towards a unifying goal:

“Over time, we've hired some great people into the team, there are quite a few of us now, it feels like a really close bunch of people, all hand-picked and all great characters, it's a fantastic place to work. It's probably a very expensive way of buying a lot of mates, but that's what it feels like really!”

How can I get involved with B Lab?

If you’re interested in the work that B Lab do and would like to get involved, Tasmin explains a few ways you can do so:

“Look for B Corps when you are out shopping, that means you're using your money to support amazing brands that do amazing things. Another thing you can do is check out any local B Corp events, and you can do this if you search for B Corp local events  in your area.”

What’s next?

Becoming B Corp Certified is one thing, but continuing to better ourselves and meet higher standards is another. Companies with B Corp status must verify every three years, which is something we are constantly working on to track our performance, meet more goals, and uphold our standards for social and environmental impact. Keep a close eye on our social media channels for news updates on our sustainability journey.
